    Looking after our internationally recognised wetlands and forests

    The Murray LLS has provided Australian Government funds to local landholders and a number of Aboriginal groups to carry out weed and pest control works in and around the Werai, Millewa and Koondrook-Perricoota Central Murray Ramsar wetland sites. Ramsar listed sites are recognised under an international agreement for their ecological value. The works include feral pig trapping, fox baiting and woody weed and aquatic weed control.

    Little fish, big future

    A wetland rehabilitation program in the Murray Valley National Park is giving one tiny fish a fighting chance at survival. The Southern Pygmy Perch and its natural habitat are the focus of an environmental watering program co-ordinated by the Office of Environment and Heritage.

    Restdown Wines Wetland and Heritage Walking Trail

    In 2008, we established a short walking trail with interpretative signs to show the visitor this unique part of the world. Four hundred year old Box trees, an ephemeral wetland and even rare birds such as Bush-Stone Curlews bring visitors to our site.

    Extensive vegetation clearing and altered land management have caused a reduction in the extent and diversity of carbon stores across Australia. Wetlands represent a major potential carbon sink with high levels of productivity and integral incorporation of carbon into sediments, as well as contributing to biodiversity within the landscape.

    Restdown Wines

    “Restdown” is a 450 hectare farming property encompassing an underground carbon neutral winery, environmentally sustainable vineyard, a wetland walking trail, and a Hereford beef herd. Our wines are completely handmade from vine to bottle, in our purpose-built, underground winery. Their uniqueness reflects our use of organic fertilisers and sprays and the pride taken in creating distinctive, limited release wines.
